Creating a Bright Basement Bathroom
Our basement bathroom is almost finished – the plumbing is complete, the drywall is being hung, the fixtures have arrived - I can almost hear the toilet flush! This has been a long time coming - as I will detail in a longer post about our basement renovation - but for this post I’d like to focus on just the bathroom design plan and sources.
There was a bathroom in our basement when we moved in, however, we decided to move it to a new location to create a better overall layout. Unfortunately, this new location does not contain any windows, but I am still determined to make the bathroom feel light and bright.
This bathroom will be heavily used by guests, especially those who come to use our pool, so I want to make sure that the two spaces transition well and made sense together. Our three small children will be using this bathroom, as well as their many friends in the neighborhood, so a durable, easy to clean space is a top priority.
This design board shows the final plan for all the fixtures I will be using in this space.
Vanity
I wanted to make sure that our vanity fit the style of our midcentury home, but was still durable and ultimately affordable. This one from AllModern was perfect. I love the clean lines, the white ceramic top/sink, and the black metal legs. The base is also a combination of solid and manufactured wood which should hold up to the regular summertime use.

Mirror
We are using lots of black accents in our basement which I am loving. I really wanted a round mirror for above the vanity to contrast all of the straight lines and rectangles. This mirror was very affordable and looks great – I’m excited to hang it with the sconces on either side.
We purchased the 24” diameter mirror.
Lighting
In every space I renovate, I try to have a variety of light sources. For this bathroom, we chose to install several can lights in the ceiling, a light that was part of the fan, and sconces on either side of the mirror. This was one of the hardest elements for me to select. I wanted to choose something modern that was both black and chrome since we would be using both metals in the space. Finding these affordable sconces from Shades of Light was a perfect match.

Flooring
I went back and forth on a lot of ideas for the flooring for this space. I really wanted something that felt indoor/outdoor and considered several different materials including concrete tile to achieve that feeling. Finally, I found an affordable porcelain tile that looks like terracotta. We plan to use a dark grey grout between the tiles.

Toilet
To say you are excited about a toilet seems weird, I know, but I am excited about this toilet. We are testing out a wall-mounted toilet in this bathroom because I really want to use one in our master bath. Our master bath will probably be the last room we renovate in this house (not because it isn’t bad – it’s terrible – but because that renovation will be more of a facelift and not something that changes the way we use our home). Wall hung toilets are more expensive, but they save lots of space and you can CLEAN UNDER THEM!

Wall Art
As I explained above, this bathroom is the one all of our pool guests will use, so I’ve been thinking about using wall art that is bright, cheerful, and pool themed (without being cheesy!) I love this print from Society6 and keep coming back to it.

Paint
The entire basement is Sherwin Williams Pure White, and we are planning on using it in the bathroom as well. I absolutely love this color white. It is bright and clean and ever-so-slightly warm without being yellowy. We tried several whites before we landed on this one and it is PERFECT.
Hopefully I will be posting the finished product sometime in the next month or so!
